Island Cottage

Under Construction
Set on a wooded island in North Kawartha, Ontario, this recreational residence replaces an existing cottage with a new retreat carefully shaped by its distinctive site and relationship to the water.

The design emerged through an iterative process of drawings, physical and digital studies, three-dimensional models, and visualizations, allowing the architecture to evolve through continuous testing and refinement. The cottage is pulled back from the island’s point and organized into three interconnected volumes.

A generous day volume extends toward the point, bay, and lake, with expansive decks designed to embrace the surrounding landscape. A more intimate night volume retreats into the tree canopy, providing privacy, shelter, and a stronger connection to the forest. Between them, a smaller link negotiates the differing orientations and creates a subtle change in direction.

The resulting composition responds to the island’s varied conditions, balancing openness and retreat while allowing the landscape to shape the architecture.
