Designed as a contemporary refuge within a Toronto backyard, this Garden Suite expands the idea of what an ancillary structure can become. Compact but deliberately multifunctional, the building accommodates spaces for contemplation, relaxation, exercise, focused work, and the occasional Saturday night poker game.

The design approaches these seemingly disparate activities as a shared architectural experience, creating a flexible environment that can shift character throughout the day. Clean lines, carefully proportioned openings, and a restrained material palette establish a sense of calm, while the compact footprint gives the structure an intimate and purposeful presence within the garden.

Rather than functioning simply as an outbuilding, the Garden Suite becomes a private retreat from the intensity of the city — a place to think, work, move, gather, and unwind. The project explores how a small architectural intervention can provide considerably more than its modest scale suggests, transforming an overlooked backyard into a space for contemporary urban life.
